Day 45 - 4/30/07 - Peer Review and Course Evaluation

How quickly a semester passes! I've truly enjoyed getting to know each of you and I wish you luck in the future.

Please complete the class evaluation which can be found at: https://ssl.coe.uga.edu/course_eval/. If you are not able to access our course evaluation please let me know so I can have the course coordinator open the site for you.

Peer Review:
Today, the last day of class, each of you will peer review a fellow student's website. This will be the equivalent of the showcase/poster session that other EDIT 2000 sections of this course are working on. By making it a in-class activity and a peer review you don't need to create a poster. This also means you don't carry a poster on the bus to class. The in-class activity will count as the final 5 points.

I have printed out a peer evaluation form. I expect you to provide constructive advice on how the website you are reviewing can be improved. If you don't have a suggestion as to how to improve a particular web page in the comment section indicate what was done well. In other words, I don't expect you to fill in the comment section with "good job." I expect formative feedback.

After completing your peer evaluation, please share your insights with the student who created the website that you have evaluated. Please turn in your peer evaluation form to me by the end of class.

Wrap-up Web portfolio
Make sure all portions of your web portfolio are completed and published (that includes the introduction page and a navigation bar on all of your pages.

I will begin grading tomorrow and your grades will be available in OASIS immediately after I post them. Please let me know if you have questions about your final grade. Have a great summer!

Day 41- 4/20/07 Evaluating Teacher Resources - Wrap up

Today we will discuss the final section of the Evaluating Teacher Resources section of this course. I focused a lot of time on this section because I feel it is an important issue that needs to be addressed. So why do I think it is important?
I think it is important because:
1. The World Wide Web can be a great place to accomplish research on many topics.
2. The drawback to that is since putting documents or pages on the web is easy, cheap or free, unregulated, and unmonitored (at least in the USA) anyone can post anything and make it look authentic.
3. There is a lot of questionable material out there but there are also great resources that can enhance your student's learning experince and help you use the appropriate teaching strategy (constructivism - like in a WebQuest).
4. But the burden is on you - the reader, teacher, student - to establish the validity, authorship, timeliness, and integrity of what you find. Documents can easily be copied and falsified or copied with omissions and errors -- intentional or accidental.
5. As teachers, you will need to teach your students how to evaluate media and its impact on society. I hope that the Evaluating teacher resources section of this course has helped you cultivate the habit of healthy skepticism, of questioning everything you find with critical thinking.

So today we will look over the rest of the questions for this section. Question II is a opportunity to reflect on your experience using Web based resources to create your Web Quest or Powerpoint games. Question III will provide you with the opportunity to share what you have learned about the evaluation processes. I hope that if you use this webportfolio for a job interview or to market your teaching and technology integration skills that this section will emphasize your ability to effectively deliver instruction by using only high quality resources.

Please note that I have placed a link to Ms. Cohen's materials presented at the beginning of this section. She was nice enough to also provide a link the materials she uses to teach students how to evaluate web based resources.

Monday is a work day. Attendence will not be taken. Don't forget that your reflections are due (hard copy) on Wednesday, at the beginning of class (4/25). Place your final product in one of the large envelopes I have provided you.

If you have any questions don't forget to email me. I will be unavailable Fri - Monday morning but you can reach me Monday after 5 until Wednesday morning.

Day 40 4/18/07 - Educational Blogs

Today we will discuss the Evaluating Teacher Resources section about Educational Blogs.
What is a blog?
A weblog (usually shortened to blog, but occasionally spelled web log) is a web-based publication consisting primarily of periodic articles (normally in reverse chronological order). Although most early weblogs were manually updated, tools to automate the maintenance of such sites made them accessible to a much larger population, and the use of some sort of browser-based software is now a typical aspect of "blogging". A Web site that contains dated entries in reverse chronological order (most recent first) about a particular topic. Functioning as an online journal, blogs can be written by one person or a group of contributors. Entries contain commentary and links to other Web sites, and images as well as a search facility may also be included.
For this section you are to answer the questions on the Evaluating Teacher Resources page.
  • I have provided you a link to some educational blogs on the Evaluating Teacher Resources page and a link to some evaluation sheets that can help you answer the questions.
  • I have provided you with a link to a document explaining how to create your own blog at the Evaluating Teacher Resources page.

Remember that for this assignment, creating an blog is optional. Turn in your 1 page reflection for this section with the rest of the requirements for the Evaluating Teacher Resources Assignment on April 25th.

Day 39- 4/16/07 - PPT Games - Work Day

Today is a workday set aside for creating your ppt games. I will be in the classroom if you need any help. Don't forget to print out the gameboard so I can test your game out and grade it. The ppt game should be linked to your webportfolio page and is due by Wednesday, the 18th.

Have a good day and see you Wednesday.
